Arsenal has a couple of strong links to strikers that are known to be available. Alexandre Lacazette wants to take the step to the next level, as does Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Then there is Kylian Mbappe with his newly-revealed release clause.
Despite what they say, Arsenal can still attract big name guys. That attraction is helped by the fact that Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City all have strikers well in place. So do Chelsea. They have the present in Diego Costa and the future in Michy Batshuayi.
However, that can be quickly upturned if the bear-like Brazilian takes the money and runs to China.
Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjianare reportedly willing to pay Costa £650,000 a week. They tried to make the move work in January for £90m, but it didn’t work out for them then.
China has shown an ability to lure away some pretty big time players, especially from Chelsea, as both Ramires and Oscar have taken the money and run. So while it is a very realistic possibility, here are three reason why the Gunners should hope this this possibility does not come to pass.
3. We Know Him
There is a certain benefit of knowing a player, especially when that player is Diego Costa, who depends on his ability to get under an opponents skin to be successful. Those antics have been used and abused against Laurent Koscielny, Gabriel Paulista, and now evenShkodran Mustafi, who shut down the Brazilian in their inaugural meeting.
Costa is a solid striker, but if you negate that mental edge to his game, you negate a lot of who he is. And thankfully, the Gunners should have a good idea how to consistently do that.
Moving on to No. 2.
2. The Alternatives Are Scarier
Diego Costa is a psychological warrior who derives a lot of his success on his ability to win the mental war. But that can and does get shut down. Meanwhile, there are some strikers out there who don’t need that psychological side and instead rely on supreme ability.
The alternatives to Costa are much scarier. The first is Michy Batshuayi, who is a veritable stallion. He has strength and speed and is going to grow into one hell of a striker
In all likelihood though, the Blues would look externally for help. And that is where it gets truly scary. Romelu Lukaku, who Batshuayi wishes he could be, is linked with a move to Chelsea. That is a horrifying prospect, as Lukaku just needs a bit of motivation to be one of the all-around best strikers in the world.
Another option is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, another athletic masterclass who can outmaneuver the best and the brightest defenses with his combination of size and speed.
These are strikers that you can’t negate just by not giving into their prerequisites. These are strikers that continually hurt the best in the world over and over again.
Then there is Alexandre Lacazette, who is also looking at a move to the next level.
All of these possibilities, when combined with the Chelsea attack, scare me a hell of a lot more than a foe we know well enough already.
Finally, No. 1.
1.
1. They’d Reenter Transfer Market
In order for those other scarier options to come to fruition, Chelsea first have to reenter the transfer market, which means ) is lost. For a couple reasons.
For starters, Chelsea will probably win the league. Or, at the very least, they will finish above the Gunners and they will absolutely be in the Champions League.
Secondly, they are ruthless in the transfer window. Look at N’Golo Kante. They didn’t hesitate. They also beat us to Eden Hazard. And with Antonio Conte, they are even more ruthless. They want all of the best and unfortunately, they are collecting them pretty effectively.
Arsenal waits for the perfect player to come to them and by the time that comes to pass, a lot of players that could absolutely have upped the overall ability of the team have gone to rivals like Chelsea, who don’t wait. They strike first.
Chelsea would be a very tasty destination, probably one of the most delicious in Europe. Meanwhile, Arsenal is on the brink of a full-on revolution, as their struggles this year have been well documented and plenty-well wallowed over
